在高中英语中有几种特殊用法，那就是活用。具有这种特点的词，已经失去了本来的作用，在句子中起连词的作用，引导状语从句，现归纳如下。

　　一、 the moment, the minute , the second , the instant等，即定冠词与瞬间名词连用时，相当于as soon as, 表示“一……就……”

　　例1  The moment he reached the country, he star－ted his search .(Roots, Lesson54, Book III) 他一到达那个国家（冈比亚），就开始探寻工作。

　　例２  The moment he got into the office, he told us the bad news.  他一走进办公室，就告诉了我们这个坏消息。
　　
　　例３  I’ll tell him the minute he comes. 他一来我就告诉他。

　　二、 every , each 和time 连用，表示“每……就……”时

　　例４  Second, do not stop every time you come to a word or phrase you do not know.(On Reading, Lesson 57, Book III )   其次，不要一遇到不认识的单词或短语就停下来。

　　例５  Each time you fail, start all over again.(My Teacher, Lesson 68, Book III )   每一次你失败时，就从头做起。

　　三、 the year, the week, the day 等，即定冠词和年、月、日等名词连用时，表示“那一……”

　　例６  He didn’t go to work the day his mother was ill.  他母亲生病的那一天，他没去上班。

　　例７  The Olympic Games weren’t held the year the Second World War broke out.  第二次世界大战爆发的那一年，奥运会没举行。

　　四、 immediately ,directly ,instantly (副词)等，用作连词，与as soon as的用法一样。表示“一……就……”

　　例８  I recognized him instantly I saw him. 我一看见他就认出他来了。

　　例９  We came directly we got your telephone.  我们一接到你的电话就赶来了。

　　例1０  Please let me know immediately you get the results.  你一得到结果，请立即告诉我。

　　五、 the first/last time ,即定冠词加序数词和time连用时，表示“……时候”

　　例１１  The last time I saw her , she was studying at Nanjing University .  我最后一次见到她时，她在南京大学学习。

　　六、 the spring 等，即定冠词与四季名称连用时，表示“那个……”

　　例１２  He got married to Mary the winter I came from abroad.  我从国外回来的那个冬天，他同玛丽结婚了。

　　七、 next ,any 和time连用时，表示“……时候”

　　例１３  Come to my office any time you like.  你随便什么时候来我们学校都行。

　　例１４  Next time you come to my school , do tell me.  下次你来我们学校，务必告诉我。

　　八、 at/by the time，表示“到……时候”

　　例１５  By the time he was 13 ,he had learned 5000 English words .  到他13岁的时候，他已经学会了5000个英语单词了。

　　例１６  At the time he was 5, he was taken to Beijing.  他5岁的时候，被带着去过北京。
